The Astral (also known as the Astral Sky or Outer Space) is the void expanse between planets like Halann and other celestial bodies.

Astral Terror

Astral Terror is an affliction of madness related to observing and investigating the Astral, such as using spells or powerful telescopes to look into it for long periods of time. While many medical professionals dispute its existence, its main symptoms involve an irrational fear of the unknown, eventually leading to uncharacteristic behaviours like speaking in incomprehensible languages, inability to act or make decisions, madness, hysteria, often leading to sectioning at an insane asylum, and at worse, comatose or suicide. Another known symptoms is deep research into the fringe theory of the Dark Descendants.

One survivor describes their experience as "the feeling of an unwanted stranger in your house. A stranger that leaves no signs, but you know is there. You keep waiting for them to attack or at least make themselves known, but they never do. You may first try to live your ordinary life but it feels like you have become privy to secret information, and the knowledge alone that there is something not right in reality itself will gnaw away at you until it consumes your mind and soul."

Dûr-Vazhatun Incident

During the Last Days of the Dwarovar the entirety of the dwarven hold of Dûr-Vazhatun, which was known for its scholarly and academic works, was said to be afflicted by Astral Terror. Archaeologists say that a massive gathering of dwarves to use the grand observatory of the hold caused a mass affliction of Astral Terror, causing mass hysteria and madness that eventually spread throughout the hold.

Spaceflight?

The Precursor Empire was said to have avoided spaceflight (or astralflight), instead using portals to connect themselves to other worlds, possibly using incredibly advanced teleportation spells to do so. Not much else is known about their astral empire, but records suggest that the portal nexus known as the Pillar of the Heavens was closed long before the Ruin of Aelantir.

Due to the advancements of artificery in the 19th and 20th centuries the idea of creating a craft or ship to go into the Astral was popularized, but as of writing (the 20th century) none have succeeded. In recent trends a great many within the scientific community, especially those who subscribe to Ravelian doctrines have begun to discourage such endeavours due to the rising cases of Astral Terror within would-be astrologists.
