Remnant Fleet is the name given to the fleet of ships who fled Aelantir during the Day of Ashen Skies in 1 AA. The fleet harbored the forefathers of the Elven peoples, spending a thousand years lost at sea, a period known as the Great Wander. In the year 1000 AA, the Great Storm destroyed several ships in the fleet, including two of the main Migrant Ships.

In the aftermath of the storm, the Remnant Fleet was guided by Munas Moonsinger to Cannor, arriving at the Damesear. This event, known as The Landing, caused the dissolution of the Remnant Fleet, with the elves splitting the ships between the future Moon Elven, Sea Elven, and Sun Elven peoples.

Composition

While the exact number of ships is unknown, the fleet was large enough to sustain the elven population towards the numbers to this day, ranging from one hundred to more than a thousand ships. The fleet was composed of every type of vessel that the elves managed to flee on, from small fishing ships to warships. While the smallest ships carried one or two families at most, the largest ones, known as Migrant Ships, were able to transport and sustain entire cities. The smallest of the Migrant Ships for example, and the only one still functioning as a ship to this day, the Diranhriá, has a length of 150 meters, but the largest ones, like the Lunateín, had a length close to 400 meters.

The rise of artificery and the creation of the first ironclads sparked the myth that Migrant Ships were massive, artifice-fueled, metallic vessels. However, with the exception of some vessels that had a complete or partial hull made of Precursor Steel, all of them were made of wood, and sailed using wind (either natural or magical).

Dissolution

The first split of the fleet occurred upon reaching the waters surrounding Venaíl, as the elves made first contact with humans. It seems that through Lencori fishermen they learnt of the war raging in Cannor, and the captains held a council in the island to ponder the situation. One group decided to stay on the island under the protection of King Alcuin of Sorncóst to plan their next moves, while the rest decided to continue following Munas towards his visions from the moon. Among those who remained were several minor ships whose crews would found the principality of Venáil, and the migrant ship Diranhriá and its fleet.

The Diranhría was the smallest of the Migrant Ships, but it had the largest subfleet. The Sundancer fleet was greatly affected by the Great Storm, with many vessels being crowded and low on supplies. So it captain, Jaher, decided to stay in Venaíl to gather supplies and put the fleet back together before continuing. While the original plan was to wait for a ship of the Lunateín fleet to guide them, a week after the split the Phoenix arrived at Venáil, and after a meeting with Jaher, the Diranhriá fleet followed her to Bulwar instead.

The rest of the fleet followed Munas to the Damesear, landing at the Damerian capital of Damucen, and were welcomed and fed by queen Auci Dameris, the avatar of the goddess of the moon and magic, the Dame, in what is now known as Lansday. Eventually Munas pledged eternal friendship with the Damerians, marrying Auci and committing the elven people to join the War of the Sorcerer-King in exchange for a new home. After the Landing, a second group abandoned the fleet, not wanting to participate in the war. The most notable was the Migrant Ship Galsheáh, which abandoned the fight and instead sailed to the Alenic Reach, where its captain, Maldorian, founded the principality of Celmaldor.

Throughout the course of the War of the Sorcerer King, vessels from the Remnant Fleet participated in naval battles in the Dameshead and Divenhal seas. During, and after the war many ships left the fleet, joining their brothers in Venáil or the Sea Elven fleet which had refused Cannor and land as a new home.

The fleet was never officially dissolved, but rather the mooring of the Migrant Ships and the great expansion of Damucen into the mixed Damero-Elven city of Anbenncóst marked the end of elven life and elven rule by sea captains. The Migrant Ships became the foundations of the Elvendocks district of the city. While most of the ships that remained in possession of the Moon Elves were either destroyed in the war, decommissioned or scrapped for their resources, the Sundancer fleet was reorganized into the Sunset Fleet of the Phoenix Empire, with many of the original ships still in possession of the Exemplar State of Rezankand.
