The Kingdom of Marrhold, known as Ânumdihr in dwarven, was an insular, mountainous country in South Castanor. It was bordered to its east by the Serpentspine and to its south by the Deepwoods. It was known for having been the sole polity in Escann to survive the Greentide, as well as one of the few human polities to rule a dwarven hold in the form of its capital, Marrhold.

History[]

Pre-Alenics and Marrhold Hold[]

Very little is known about Marrholds ancient past. Only it's original dwarven name, Ânumdihr has survived to modern day. It is debated if that was it's actual name or a dwarven nickname that was given after the fall of the Aul-Dwarov. Modern archaeologists believe that its ancient dwarven inhabitants collapsed the surface gates and much of the hold itself around 6000 BA, which aligns with the supposed start date of the Last Days of Dwarovar. The dwarves of the hold itself then largely disappeared into obscurity, likely becoming one of the many surface dwarves in Escann and beyond.

Since the 18th century Gridash síl Jorkad's controversial yet popular works have claimed that the orcish race were responsible for the Last Days, and that the collapse of Marrhold's tunnels was actually an act of mercy on Escann in order to prevent orcs coming to the surface en masse.

The Alenic Migration[]

The Kingdom of Marrhold was formed by the Marrodic people, an Alenic tribe that during the Dragonwake and subsequent invasion, allied themselves with the Damerian Republic & Wexonard tribe and fought off the Gawedi in the battle of Bal Hyl. Afterwards they were offered land to settle within modern day Anbennar by the Damerians, but they refused and after a rather eventful migration across Korbarid territory, they ended up in Southern Escann, where they settled Marrvale and its surrounding areas, and most importantly, the abandoned dwarven hold of Ânumdihr, which they renamed Marrhold. Concurrently, Ulric, the Griffon Prince son of King Marr, the founder of the kingdom, domesticated the griffons who populated the area and became the first of the Griffon Riders of Marrhold, soon to be known as Griffon Knights.

Late Castanorian Period[]

Remaining largely independent during the Late Castanorian Empire era, commonly fighting against nearby lords and pretenders during the general unrest that engulfed the Late Castanor, marrodic mercenaries being a common sight in the battlefields of that era. During this period, they usually came to blows with the Kingdom of the Blademarches in particular in territorial disputes over the control of the area of Medirleigh.

War of the Sorcerer-King[]

During the War of the Sorcerer-King they endured a gruelling years-long siege by the forces of Nichmer, until they eventually sallied forth and joined the coalition forces, rallying other Escanni remnants with them. Afterwards, they become yet another kingdom in Feudal Escann, the likes of Adenica, Castellyr, or the refounded Blademarches.

The Greentide[]

Time would pass all up until the time of the Greentide in which, unlike the rest of Escann, they took a policy of "Not my problem" and merely retreated into their mountains, choosing to evacuate the less defendable valleys instead of fighting the orcs head on. The exception the Griffon Knights led by Gryf the Young, joined with the Marcher Lords and Corin around the time they met with the Count's League and were present in several battles, including the Battle of Castonath. After that, with the rest of Escann having collapsed to orcish invasion and being resettled by adventurers, they were the only kingdom remaining from before the Greentide, and were determined to reclaim their land and assert their dominance over what they saw as "greenskin barbarians" and "upstart adventurers".

Demographics[]

Insular and independent people, they are known for their resilience, which has been proven through events such as the Dragonwake, the War of the Sorcerer-King, and the Greentide.
